It was a huge celebration for hundreds of members of the French community in Doha 20 years in the making as they witnessed France lift the 2018 World Cup yesterday in a stunning fashion.
The atmosphere was festive at Ritz-Carlton Doha’s Al Wosail Ballroom which teemed with football fans comprising mostly French citizens as well as other nationalities who had been actively following this year’s World Cup matches. Together, they rooted for the French team every second of the game which was shown on a gigantic screen.
“We are extremely happy! They did very well. They are the world champions and they will come to Qatar in 2022!” Ambassador of France to Qatar H E Eric Chevallier ecstatically told the media at the conclusion of the final match.
The huge crowd erupted into a big applause every time the French team scored a goal during the thrilling game against Croatia. While some waved French flags, others donned blue, white and red costumes and accessories resembling the French tricolor.
It was a historic win for France as it was their second World Cup victory since winning on home soil in 1998.
“This is a well deserved win. It’s been 20 years since we won the World Cup , that’s why we are very happy today!” said Antoine, one of the passionate fans who came along with his friends to watch the game.
“I’m already looking forward to the next edition of the World Cup. I’m sure it will even be more exciting and one of the best since it will be here in Doha,” he added, while he proudly waved the French flag as he celebrated with the rest of the crowd.
Yesterday was a big day filled with festivity for all football fans in Qatar who thronged various venues to watch the finals including several designated World Cup fan zones as well as many hotels in Doha.
